Understanding Your Rights After a Hit and Run Accident

Understanding Your Rights After a Hit and Run Accident

On Sunday May 3 rd, a hit and run accident in Dallas turned deadly all because one driver acted negligently and failed to stop at the scene. The incident - which occurred yesterday at the intersection of Royal Lane and Harry Hines Blvd - is shedding light on the recklessness of drivers who choose to flee the scene of accidents.

According to the Dallas Police Department, a driver in a White Chevrolet Tahoe was involved in a minor fender bender at an intersection. Rather than stop to exchange insurance information, the Tahoe sped off through a red light, where it hit another vehicle and collided into a pole. The driver of the Tahoe was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other driver was taken to a local hospital for injuries.

Protect the Rights of Hit and Run Accident Victims

Hit and run accidents can create a number of legal complications - including serious criminal penalties for the motorist who flees the scene and potential issues for any victims who are injured in the accident and wish to recover compensation for their damages.

By law, all drivers are required to stop at the scene of an auto accident. When they fail to do so, they place others at risk of not receiving needed medical attention and compensation. Although hit and run cases can be challenging, injured victims and families do have rights and options for recovering the money they need.

If hit and run drivers can be located - through Police work and investigations - victims may be able to pursue compensation by filing a lawsuit to hold them accountable for their negligence. In other cases, victims may have the option of pursuing compensation through their own insurance provider, who may then launch their own investigation to find the offending motorist and hold them liable.
